With only a few days until the Australian V Festivals kick off, and with me, Eleanor Conway, your trusty Global VPass winner already en route, thought it might be time to whet your appetite with my first tour diary. London to Hong Kong to Sydney… all in a day’s work!

So here’s a televisual blast from the past - well just about this time last year when it all kicked off at Centennial Park in Sydney for the 2008 V Festival. This is what this year’s V Festival has to live up to. Will the glamorous and the good of Sydney come out in force again this year for The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Elbow, Snow Patrol, The Kills, M83, Tame Impala and Howling Bells…?

“England’s a fuckin’ terrible place to play. I didn’t enjoy it at all. We went to Berlin afterwards and that was really fun.”

Martin Martini is not a normal musician. Normally if a musician were to tell me that they went over to England recently with the sole purpose of finding a drag queen who picks up one hundred dollar bills with her asshole, I might be a little turned off. Normally I would. When Martin Martini explained this, however, it seemed strangely appropriate. Turns out he never found the drag queen, and he didn’t really like the country either.

“I am currently working with Damon Albarn on a new album project with other guests. I am also involved in Africa Express, a series of events promoting African music. We’ve had some hectic shows at Glastonbury, Liverpool, Lagos and Kinshasa, and there’s more to come in 2009.”

It’s hard not to be a little overcome in the presence of afrobeat originator Tony Allen. After all, Brian Eno has described him as “perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived.”

Don’t miss your chance to see rock royalty in Sydney this week when Alice In Chains take to the Enmore Theatre stage on Wednesday 25th Feburary. After a long hiatus, the members of Alice In Chains have decided to honour their musical legacy by taking their beloved songs to the road. Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez and Sean Kinney will be joined by William Duvall on lead vocals who fills the void left after the tragic 2002 death of the legendary Layne Staley. This year the band are thrilled to be reunited and returning to the music they created and the legacy that is Alice In Chains.

There’s no two ways about it, Ryan Adams is one of the most gifted but sadly underrated musicians of our time. The Enmore Theatre was pulsing with anticipation. Maybe it was the expectation from those who witnessed the infamous ‘in the dark’ Enmore performance last time around, or maybe it was simply the volatile reputation that proceeds the man. Either way, tonight’s audience were waiting for Ryan Adams to deliver, and deliver he did…

G’day folks! Howling Bells have succeeded in expanding their range of melancholy graininess into a forte of songwriting which is both formidable and peculiar. Radio Wars showcases some of the old genius from their self-titled debut album, yet also imbeds new and unexplored shades of beautiful darkness into their style. The first album was certainly not a one-off then…

The Kills, M83, Howling Bells, Jenny Lewis, Jackson Jackson, Wolf & Cub and Children Collide join The Killers, Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Elbow and Duffy on next month’s V Festival Australia lineup. Legendary 80s heroes Madness and Human League have also been added to the bill - fitting in to that classic retro groove so nobly filled by Duran Duran last year and Pet Shop Boys the year before. The presence of The Kills’ Jamie Hince will alert Aussies to the possibilities of one Kate Moss making an appearance down under…

The piano fades into the background noise and I suddenly realise just how hard that is. There are no other sounds in the room but for the subtle flip of cards or the occasional unacknowledged fart. There really isn’t much going on here. It seems like a quiet vacation more than an institution. “It limited our opportunities for editing and we had to have parts more exactly as we wanted them.”
