Virgin Mobile USA today announced that Virgin Mobile FreeFest tickets have been scooped up.  But music fans need not worry, because people across the East Coast will have the chance to volunteer through The Re*Generation Free I.P. program in order to receive a VIP ticket to the hottest free festival of the summer. The Virgin Mobile FreeFest will take place August 30th at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.  Artists include Weezer, Blink 182, and Public Enemy.

To respond to the sharp decrease in national social giving, Virgin Mobile FreeFest is giving music fans opportunities to devote time to community service at designated homeless youth shelters around the country for a VIP ticket to Virgin Mobile FreeFest.  Virgin Mobile USA is also encouraging people, regardless of wireless carrier, to text “FREEFEST” to 20222, making a $5 donation  which will go to select youth homeless centers through The RE*Generation program, Virgin Mobile USA’s initiative to help homeless youth.

“Over two million young people will experience homelessness in the U.S., many of them due to domestic violence, abuse or neglect,” said Ron Faris of Virgin Mobile USA. “With charitable giving at a low, we hope this program inspires music fans to volunteer locally and engage in this issue. There’s never been a better opportunity to reward fans with a free VIP ticket to this amazing, sold out festival.”

“Once again, the folks at Virgin have come up with an idea that is so simple and wonderful, it reminds us we need people from outside the concert industry to take a fresh look,” said I.M.P. Chairman and FreeFest producer Seth Hurwitz.  “The idea of offering people the opportunity to do charity work in exchange for concert tickets is truly inspiring, and I am going to look for ways to do that the rest of the year.  Why not use our power to give?”

Get Involved Locally

Sign-ups for volunteers in Maryland and Washington, D.C., are being coordinated at Virgin Mobile’s FreeFest website starting today at http://www.virginmobilefreefest.com/; select homeless youth organizations have been aggregated together to accommodate volunteers around the country.

People in the Maryland and Washington, D.C. area can sign up to volunteer 13 hours in exchange for one Free I.P. ticket. This offer is good while supplies last, as there are a limited number of tickets available. Volunteers can also participate in broader community service projects offered by Howard County for a general admission ticket.

“When we started the concept of Summer of Service in Howard County, we wanted youth to contribute,” said County Executive Ken Ulman. “We’re honored to partner with Virgin Mobile around this truly unique and inspired initiative.”

Volunteer Opportunities on the East Coast

Outside Maryland and Washington, D.C. Virgin Mobile USA is organizing volunteer projects in Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Two Free I.P. (VIP) tickets will be awarded to the volunteers who complete the most time above the minimum of 13 hours. Winning volunteers from Philadelphia, New York and Boston will receive free transportation to Virgin Mobile FreeFest courtesy of Megabus, the official bus partner.

Homeless youth organizations working with Virgin Mobile USA include Bridge Over Troubled Waters in Boston, Green Chimneys in New York, HELP USA in Philadelphia, Sasha Bruce in Washington, D.C., and StandUp For Kids in Baltimore.

With the good comes the bad, we all know that. Gigs are no different. There are plenty of potential hazards that you can hopefully avoid with this handy guide. Think of this as your gig Bible that will make your evening as enjoyable as possible until there all covered. Or until all the ideas for this feature get used up.

So, your favourite band have just announced a series of gigs that are going to be taking place in the coming months. Only problem is, how do you get hold of a ticket? You’re at school/uni/work and can’t really afford to skive off to stand in the freezing wind with hundreds of other gig goers. There is only one alternative. The trusty ticket-line or various outlets on the internet such as See Tickets or Tickermaster.

Unless there is a pre-sale for fans to buy tickets in advance or you have inside contacts, it’s impossible to get anywhere. Like every other pleb, you’ll be forced to aimlessly redial the phone number to be greeted with that same engaged tone or constantly refresh the internet to see if the ticket site you’re using has picked itself back up.

When Oasis announced their summer 2009 stadium tour, I was one of the morons who decided to try and buy tickets when they were immediately put on sale. For over two hours I pressed refresh on the internet and had no luck. When I did get through to the sales page and pressed confirm, there was no message telling me I’d got my ticket allocation.

Rather annoyingly, I seemed to have lost out. Then I had to be content with reading stories on the internet about the tour selling out in record time. Hmm, not the end of the world, I’ve seen the mouthy duo from Manchester a couple of times and their last album was another disappointment.

For a laugh, I typed in “Oasis” on eBay to see what items were for sale. To my amazement there were pages and pages of tickets for the Oasis stadium tour in 2009. What an uncanny thing to have happened to so many people. After buying 20 tickets - only for their friends and family I assume, their plans must have suddenly changed. Maybe a wedding was announced two hours after the tickets were bought. Never mind, I’m sure the sellers would return the tickets to the promoters for a refund and definitely not to sell them for inflated prices. However, the latter scenario seems to be the reality and no-one from team eBay seems to give a flying fudge.

Interestingly enough, a website has been launched this week to give punters a fair crack of the whip to actually get tickets for gigs when bands do one-off shows or are in demand. According to some official blurb, officialboxoffice.com does the following:

“We aim to let fans who either no longer want to go to a gig or were unable to buy tickets when they originally went on sale to securely sell and purchase genuine tickets from each other.”

But isn’t that what eBay does already? Maybe the simple solution would be to reduce the amount of tickets you can buy from 20 down to a more modest 5 or 6 online.

Before the internet, it was amusing to see  a couple of forty year old skin heads floating around outside a venue and offering you tickets for a Chemical Brothers gig for £50. Despite them being scum of the Earth, their business approach was quite unique. They never buckled to pressure and even when the headliners of the gig came on, the price of a ticket wasn’t lowered by £30.  £50 was the price you’d have to pay. Even if they made a loss and a genuine music fan lost out. Especially if a song that was played that only appears on a Japanese dubplate of a 12″ promo release.

So what about my own Oasis adventure? Well I actually did get the tickets. 30 of them! The day after the gig went on sale, a woman from the bank rang and asked me why I’d spent over £1000 on seetickets.com. After a bit of confusion, I remembered that my failed purchases must have gone through. Though a lack of confirmation email had me believe differently. At the moment, I’m not overly sure how many I’ve got as we are still in “discussion”. But if I am landed with 30, I’ll sell some on.

For face value of course.

Glastonbury Festival have finally confirmed the news we’ve all been saying we knew already. Bruce Springsteen is to headline the 2009 festival on Saturday night.

“I’m so pleased that Bruce Springsteen has agreed to come to Worthy Farm for the first time” says Michael Eavis on the Glastonbury website. “He’s one of the all-time rock legends and I’m confident that this will be one of our best shows ever. He’s also a Barack Obama supporter, which makes two headliners in a row who’ve backed the new President.”

Franz Ferdinand have already confirmed their appearance and rumours of further headliners include Blur and Neil Young.

Glastonbury takes place on June 26-28 and even though tickets have already sold out, a small amount of cancelled tickets will go back on sale at 9am on April 5th.

So - is this good news, bad news? Who do you want to see play?

Yes - the news that all Oasis fans have been waiting for - Blur have confirmed that they are all set to reform in 2009 and will play Hyde Park, London on July 3. This will be the first time the original foursome have played together since naughty Graham Coxon left a few years back. Kinks’ fan Damon Albarn has been busy being the sound behind the animated Gorillaz, working with Clash man Paul Simonon on The Good, The Bad & The Queen and resurrecting Monkey magic in time for the BBC’s Beijing Olympics stings. Cheese fan Alex James has been busy on a farm somewhere, writing columns for British newspapers and trying to conduct an orchestra for a BBC reality TV series (and the less said about Fat Les and Wig Wam the better). Um, frankly I don’t know what drum fan Dave Rowntree has been up. But I bet he’s glad he’s got some big dates in his diary now for 2009.

Tickets are on sale from 9am GMT on Friday 12 December from livenation.co.uk.

If this doesn’t make some Blur fan happy enough for Christmas, then how about a promo of The Kinks’ CD boxset, tickets to see the Ian Dury play or The Clash book, CD & DVD?

Yes you heard right, prolific songwriter Ryan Adams is bringing his Cardinals back to Australian shores in January. Last here in 2007, their live show was certainly a talking point, and with their new critically acclaimed album Cardinology in the bag, this trip is sure to get tongues wagging all over again.

Let it be known that The Cardinals are much more than just a backing band for one of this decade’s most phenominal artists. The musicianship within this group is quite frankly mind blowing and must be seen to be believed.

Tickets for the following shows are on sale 9am Friday 28 November… but get in quick, they will not last!

Tuesday 27th January - The Tivoli, Brisbane

Thursday 29th January - Enmore Theatre, Sydney
